CONGRATULATIONS ON PURCHASING A CHIP IT

PERFORMANCE PRODUCT

the world’s best featured diesel chip

PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT BEFORE CALLING FOR SUPPORT.

1) The Chip It Performance Module is customisable via your laptop running MSWindows. A Serial to USB Converter cable which allows data transfer mustbe correctly installed onto the Windows software. Other than the information below, we do not provide software support for the Serial USBConverter cable/ driver as each computer has different software and hardware requirements/problems.

2) If you do not understand the instructions below, please call a computer expert to get you through this as this will correct most issues unless the cable or Chip Harness is faulty.

This document assumes you have CORRECTLY connected the Chip It Module to the Common Rail and MAPSensor. Ignition “ON” is notnecessary although we recommend to “flash” tunes only whilst vehicle engine is switched off.

If you have not fitted the Module and are concerned about fitting it yourself, you will need to take the vehicle to a local mechanic to do the fit-up for you.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY KIND OF LIMP MODE OR ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CONDITION, PLEASE REMOVETHE CHIP COMPLETELY BEFORE HEADING TO THE DEALER FOR ANY WARRANTY WORK. IF YOU HAVE NOT REMOVED THE CHIP BEFORE HEADING TO THE DEALER CHIP IT AUSTRALIA P/L WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY REPAIR COSTS WHAT SO EVER.
NB: FOR WARRANTY PROCEEDURES PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT ON THE LAST PAGE.

To change or read tunes on your Chip It Module please follow these procedures below.

From factory, your Chip It Performance Module will most likely be pre-configured with Tune 5 from the Thumb Drive supplied with Module.
Additional Tunes to suit your vehicle are available from the Thumb Drive supplied with the Module or may be available from the Chip It website under “tune shop” as the website develops.

After trying the Chip out for a period of a week or so, you may try to change to a higher tune, sayfrom “Tune 5” to “Tune 7” or “tune 9” etc. However, if your vehicle experiences  a lot of black smoke under hard acceleration, your vehicle will requires a lower tune settings. This is normal and will just require you to step down 1 tune at a time until the “fault” no longer occurs. Contact Chip It for a Fuel Limiter Mod for your vehicle experiences limp mode due to high fuel pressure which overcomes the mechanical relief valve at the back of the common rail.

Let’s get started.

First of all, all the instructions, device drives, tuning software and tune folders are found on the Thumb Drive. You will need to install the Serial to USB drivers from the Thumb Drive. The Thumb Drive needs to be inserted with the Chip It Logo facing down. sup1 Support NB: If you do not know your way around Microsoft Windows, you will need to grab assistance from a computer expert. Again, we are sorry that we are unable to provide assistant here and in most instances the pre-programmed Chip will not need re-flashing with a new tune. Again, please do not call Chip It for help with loading the Serial to USB drivers or connecting the software to the Chip. We are not there with you to know what is going on with your laptop and do not offer tech support for such. We do sincerely apologise for this. NB: If your laptop has a serial port you can disregard this driver installation part of this manual and connect the Comms cable directly to your serial port. The Comm Port will then be Comm Port 1. You can go pick up the manual from page 5 and regards the information on page 4 and otherwise stated elsewhere regarding “Device Manager”. This will not apply to you as your Comm Port will be Port 1.

THE ZIPPED USB DRIVERS ON THE CHIP IT THUMB DRIVE WILL LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THIS.

sup2 Support • Unzip the Serial to USB drivers to a folder of your choosing on your laptop. i.e.: My Documents/CHIP IT/Driver • NEXT: Run the driver .exe program which corresponds to your Windows Version. Allow this to fully install before going onto the next step. • NEXT: Connect the supplied USB plug of the Serial to USB cable to your laptop. Your Serial to USB may look different to what is pictured however it will function the same sup3 Support • The driver SHOULD load automatically. If Windows asks you to locate a driver for the cable you will need to drill down to the location you unzipped the driver to. i.e.: My Documents/CHIP IT/Driver. Point the installer to this location so it finds the driver. • When connected correctly, depending on your version of Windows, you should be able to see the newly installed device as it quickly displays the installed device in the bottom right hand corner. If you are quick you will also see the COMMS port Windows loaded when that display appears. i.e. COMM 8. The COMM Port number USUALLY stays the same if you insert the cable into the same USB slot HOWEVER THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE. To confirm what COMM Port Windows has assigned the cable you can always check Windows “Device Manager” under “Ports”. (see below) “Device Manager is under “Control Panel”. sup4 Support • NEXT: connect the USB convertor to Serial Plug No. 1 (see below) sup5 Support • NEXT: Disconnect the water proof plug (where supplied) from Plug No. 3 on Chip It Tuning Cable (see below) sup7 Support • NEXT: Connect Plug No. 2 to Plug No. 3 (see below) sup8 Support • NEXT: Connect Plug No. 4 to Chip It Module (see below) sup9 Support

Only when you have completed the above corrections and the driver is loaded correctly you are ready to run the macrotuner software.

• NEXT: Go to the folder you wish to load tunes from, say, Folder 1 • IN THIS FOLDER double click the Macro Tuner program. NB: For the Macro Tuner to load tunes, it needs to be within the folder the tunes are in. i.e. if you wish to load tunes from folder 2 you will need to run the Macro Tuner from WITHIN this folder. If your Macro Tuner cannot load tunes and comes up with an error that says “cannot find tune5.dps”, it means the Macro Tuner has not been run purely from within the folder that holds the tunes. It also cannot be a zipped version of the program within the folder but needs to be the macrotuner215.exe itself)

e.g: Folder 2 should look something like the picture below

sup10 Support

SEE BELOW FOR MACRO TUNER INSTRUCTIONS YOU CAN JUMP DOWN TO “COMMS Port Selection” TO GET STRAIGHT INTO IT. IF YOU CANNOT CONNECT TO THE CHIP IT MODULE JUMP DOWN TO “COM PORTS CHEAT SHEET” WHERE YOU CAN FIND HELP IN FINDING AND SELECTING THE CORRECT COMMS PORT WHICH YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM HAS INSTALLED THE SERIAL TO USB CABLE ON.

After connecting all the harnesses and plugs, fit the Chip inside the padded foam bag and then fit the padded bag inside the weather-proof bag so that the Chip is protected from any water spray etc. sup11 Support

Manual For MacroTuner215

When you run MacroTuner215 the main window appears like this. sup12 Support

Figure 1 – 215 Gold Chip Screen (2x Channel Module)

sup13 Support

Figure 2 – 215 Platinum Chip Screen (4x Channel, 2 Relay Module)

The MacroTuner215 software is used to write Chip It engines tunes to both the “215 Gold” and “215 Platinum” Chips. The 215 Gold Card features 2 channels of analogue input/outputs. The 215 Platinum Chip features 4 Channels of analog inputs/outputs, 2 digital inputs which control channel operations, 2 relay outputs which are turned on and off relative to a voltage applied to a channel input or digital input.

Selecting Chips
You can select the type of Chip “215 Gold” and “215 Platinum” from the Card Type drop down box however we advise to do a “READ” befire trying to “WRITE” a tune to the Chip. On reading the tune from the Chip the number of channels and relay parameters will appear or disappear automatically.

Relays 1 and 2 (215 – 218 Platinum Series Only)
The 215 Platinum Chip has 2 relay outputs which can be programmed to turn on and off according to the value of a channel input or digital input. For example in Figure 2 Relay 1 will switch on if Channel 1 input voltage rises above 1250mV and switch off when the voltage goes below 1000mV. Relay 2 will switch on if Channel 2 input voltage falls below 2000mV and switch off when the voltage goes above 2300mV.

COMMS Port Selection
Connect your PC to the 215 Gold or Platinum Chip using the serial cable provided. Click on Comms from the main menu at the top of the screen. A small screen will appear. Select the PC Comms or Serial port your PC has assigned the Serial to USB cable to connect to the Chip. When the exit button is clicked ProInstaller215 will start polling the attached for the current input and output voltages for each channel. If you have selected the wrong Comms Port you will see an error window appear. You will need to find the Comm Port your PC has assigned before trying again.

If the Comms to the Chip is OK:
- the Comms box will switch from RED to GREEN and display the word “connected”
- the In and Out boxes above the graph will display the current voltages for the selected Channel.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE ISSUES WITH THIS, PLEASE REFER TO THE CHIP IT COMMS PORT CHEAT SHEET AVAILABLE BELOW.

Reading Parameters from the Chip
The user can read parameters from a Chip. Click on the Read Button and the Chip will read the serial number and the tune details from the Chip. You can view the progress on the Comms box. On completion of the read process the Chip type, serial number and relay parameters will be updated. The Tune Name stored in the Chip will also be displayed.

Pre-Set Tunes
The following pre-set tune files can be loaded into MacroTuner215:
Tune1.dps
Tune2.dps
Tune3.dps
Tune4.dps
Tune5.dps
Custom1.dps
Custom2.dps
Factory Tune.dps

These tunes are loaded into the software and made ready to write to the Chip It Module when the corresponding button is clicked. For example click “TUNE5” to load “Tune5.dps” file.

Writing a Tune to the Chip

Before writing to the Chip It Module press the “READ” button on the Marco Tuner to allow the software to collect data about the Chip including the serial number and type. In the Comms window wait till you see “Completed”. This will also confirm the Module can communicate with the software and cable. Next, the user can write a tune to the Module by first clicking on the Tune button “TUNE5” etc and then clicking on the “Write” Button. MacroTuner first checks the serial number of the chip and if it agrees with the chip type in the tune it will proceed with the download.

You can view the progress on the Comms box.

When completed the Comm box will show “Download Complete”.

You can write whilst the engine is running however the engine will run very rough whilst the write process completes. We suggest you “write” to the Chip It Module with the engine switched off.

You can write any number of tunes to the Chip until you find a tune you and your vehicle are happy with.

We STRONGLY suggest that tunes of Custom1 and higher be used ONLY WITH THE CHIP IT EGT CONTROLLER INTERFACE MODULE WHICH WILL DE-TUNE YOUR ENGINE WHEN ENGINE EXHUAST GAS TEMPS RISE TOO HIGH.

COM PORTS CHEAT SHEET

CHANGING COM PORTS

This Cheat Sheet assumes that you are using the Serial to USB Converter cable and the driver for the Tuning Cable (the small disk that came with your cable) has been installed.

If the driver has not been installed, you must do this FIRST. You must also connect the Tuning Cable to both your laptop and the Chip It Modules whilst the module has 12volts power. Ie connected to the car battery.

WHAT TO DO WHEN THE TUNING PROGRAM DOES NOT CONNECT

At times, the Tuning Software will not pick up the COMM Port the USB port is using.

This is normally the case when the Windows has assigned a COM Port higher than 10. To correct this, follow the steps below:
1. Press Start | Control Panel (make sure you have classic view selected) | System |
2. Then go to the “Hardware” Tab, then press “Device Manager”.
3. In the window that opens, select “Show hidden devices” in the ‘View’ menu. Now, in the list find “COM Ports”. If you expand the section under COM ports, all the COM ports that have ever been created will be displayed, the non-present ones being in grey.
4. If the driver for the Tuning Cable we sent has been loaded (you should have already done this) it will appear in the sub-list under COM Ports with a name of Prolific Serial USB Controller (or similar). Right click that item, go to Properties | COM Port Settings | Advanced Settings, and see what COM Port has been assigned. We always use
Comm 7 even if it is “IN USE”.
5. Press “Change COM Port” and select a NON used COM Port lower than 11. If all Comm Ports show as being in use, find one in the higher numbers ie 6,7,or 8 and press “OK”. Write down this COM Port number to remember it as you will need it later. When the warning screen appears saying the Comm Port is in use press “OK” to confirm you wish to proceed and press “OK” again to go back to “Device Manager” window. Then restart the Computer.

After restart, the Comms Port you just selected should now be able to be used within the Macro Tuning Program.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU CANNOT SEE “PORTS” IN THE DEVICE MANAGER LIST

To correct this, follow this path. If in doubt, employ the services of a computer literate human.

Press: Start | in the “Search Programs and Files” type “cmd” (without the quotation marks)

On that Program Icon that appears at the top of the list, right click it (DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK or press “ENTER”) and select “Run as Administrator” (if you did double click or pressed “Enter” close the window and start again.

In the Command Prompt window that opens, type in:
“set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1″ – without the quotes.
then press “Enter”

then type:
“start devmgmt.msc” without the quotes
then press “Enter”

In the box that opens, select “Show hidden devices” in the ‘view’ menu.
Now continue from point 3 above.

(To free up a COM port between 5 – 10, in the “Device Manager” window and “COM Ports”, you can uninstall any Device using a COM Port that is old or no longer in use … like Optical Mouse, Scanner etc. To uninstall, right click the item and select uninstall). If you use the procedure in point 5 above, you do not need to uninstall the device first. Windows will just give over that Comms Port to the Serial to USB cable. Windows will give that old device another Comms Port if ever the old device is reconnected.
NB: Error 43 on Windows 7 normally means a hardware error. What you may need to do is update your USB drivers which means going into “Device Manager” and going to “USB Controllers” to see if you can update the drivers that way.
